Hey, can’t you sleep? Messing up your body clock can have devastating results in your Life if you feel drowsy at work, miss vital appointments, or fall asleep at the wheel! It’s impossible to enjoy Life if you feel tired so take a break now and relax!
Here’s 10 reasons why you can’t sleep
#1 You are too tired! Sometimes you go on and on and simply overdo it! Learn to listen to your body clock and go to sleep when you really need to without pushing your endurance.
#2 Your room is too hot or too cold. Very basic but don’t lie awake, just get up and change your room temperature or add/remove clothing. It’s good to sleep with the window open because fresh air brings in a constant supply of new oxygen which is vital for good sleep.
#3 Your job is wrecking you! Long hours at the computer produce repetitive strain which may not be instantly noticeable – in fact the effects may only begin to tell as you find you can’t sleep comfortably. Firm yet soft pillows and foam to raise your legs can help.
#4 You worry. Learn to relax before bedtime with a long soothing bath and place a bag of lavender near your pillow – the aroma has gotten people sleeping peacefully since Roman times! Schedule your daily life out carefully and try to fit a lot less into each day.
#5 You feel tense about tomorrow. “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof” is an ancient proverb and it’s a great thing to realize there is only so much we can fit into 24 hours. Get a deep gulp of fresh air and play some sooting music softly with the light well dimmed. Allow yourself to drift into relaxation and sleep – you’ll be fine tomorrow!
#6 You sleep too long! One of the worst causes of insomnia is sleeping late and then taking too much sleep since you will then be awake a lot longer after this and it will really mess up your body clock. Schedule your evening so you relax more as the day wears on, dim the lights, turn the volume down and have a routine of slowing down! Go to bed at the same time daily and ensure you awake after 7-8 hours of deep sleep and rise promptly with no snoozing! A new habit!
#7 Noise rings in your ears. Difficult! Try reciting a poem to yourself and dreaming of a walk in a grassy meadow – imagine smelling the fresh grass aroma and the wild flowers. As you focus on using your imagination for your sense of smell so your sense of hearing will diminish in your front of mind. Close your eyes and roll your eyeballs gently. Massage your neck a little. Wriggle your toes. Stretch out luxuriously and feel drowsy.
#8 You close your eyes only to jerk back awake time and again. At some point in the recent past you’ve had a situation where you felt drowsy yet had to make yourself stay awake. Perhaps you were driving at the time. Your mind is replaying the scene because you felt very afraid of the potential consequences. You need to get up, stretch yourself, blink a good deal and drink some water. Get a few big gulps of oxygen. Massage your neck gently and speak soothingly to yourself: you are safe now. Unwind. Place your head very gently upon your pillow and strongly imagine a beautiful scene where you feel peaceful and safe.
#9 You’ve snatched catnaps for years and lost the habit of 7-8 hours continuous repose. It’s time for you to re-access your priorities! Schedule your life in such a way that you can fit in all you want each day but allow yourself a good night’s sleep. Having said that, many people tend to siesta mid day and then take a shorter sleep at night. It’s all about what works for you.
#10 Your partner keeps you awake! Well, there’s all reasons why they may do this but understand that there is no reason to share a bed – many couples gain much happiness by agreeing to separate bedrooms. You will sleep far better on your own bed than sharing a mattress and a quilt/duvet – you know it makes sense! Enjoy a little more space to yourself and sleep well again.
One of the main benefits of good sleep is to refresh our muscles and this won’t happen if you are tense. You probably tense up in a strange room, if you are cold, if you are afraid, if you are worried, if you have a lack of space. Ensure your body can relax completely.
Here’s what to do about sleeplessness
Essentially you are about to replace bad old habits with good new habits – feel relaxed and allow yourself time to get into your new healthy routine!
Soothe your skin before sleep with oils and a relaxing bath.
Make sure the air can circulate freely in your room.
Avoid reading late at night. Be sure to focus on beautiful serene things before sleep – not bad stuff!
Change your lifestyle if you need to!
If your conscience is telling you something then act upon it: sleep will return.
You deserve a good long sleep but don’t overdo it!
Never deprive yourself of sleep by trying to get more out of each day! Quality not quantity. Resist waking early simply to feel virtuous. Why should God care when you pray?
Never mind your family – once you feel tired go to sleep.
If you feel drowsy whilst driving pull over, park, and drift off if you need to. Plan your journeys so you always feel well rested before setting out. Sell your auto!
Unburden yourself and downscale your life so you have far less to worry about. Accept that a lot of Life simply isn’t your fault and there’s nothing you can do about it. Get counselling if you need it. Quit blaming yourself. Love your sleep!
Never feel guilty about sleeping – it’s a basic human requirement so take yours when you want to regardless of anyone else.
Resist caffeine or alcohol before sleep – drink water instead.
Stop eating at least three hours before you sleep. Four hours is better. We can get by on a lot less food! Aim for simple food and good digestion. Eat a lot more fruit and totally natural foods. Avoid sugar and salt. Avoid dessert.
Check your bedding – when did you last replace it? Buy a firm new mattress. Consider an adjustable bed or place foam cushions under your legs so you sleep with your lower legs and feet raised – this will help you a LOT! Raise your shoulders a little and keep your head tilted back to free your airway.
Change the position of your bed or try sleeping in a different room. You may even consider relocating if your street is noisy at night. You deserve all the rest you can get!
Think back to the last really good sleep you had and recreate the circumstances. Eliminate your fears by filling your day with happy business. Avoid people and situations that make you tense up. Listen to soothing music regularly and soak your feet in a bowl of warm water. The most surprising elements help us to relax!
